Jay Bachhuber is a writer, educator, and designer who has been working in the field of educational gaming since 2006. He began his career with the Tiltfactor Lab, then based at Hunter College in New York City, learning about the expressive power of games while collaborating on a number of digital and urban game projects. From his time at Tiltfactor, and specifically working with the Values At Play project, Jay developed an appreciation for how technology and games can embody the values of their creators, and how games can provide a space for players to explore these values and ideas. While exploring this understanding, Jay was part of the team that developed the Grow A Game Cards, a highly successful game design tool.
In 2007 Jay joined Global Kids to co-facilitate the Playing 4 Keeps after school program. In Playing 4 Keeps, students at Canarsie High School learned about global issues by playing serious games, and also developed game design and 21st Century literacy skills. Students collaborated with a professional game development team to produce Hurricane Katrina: Tempest in Crescent City, and award winning online game that helps players understand disaster preperation skills and how New Orleans residents worked together during Hurricane Katrina.
With the completion of Playing 4 Keeps in 2008, Jay left Global Kids to found Wise Gaming, and has since been consulting with a number of organization on educational gaming and game design projects. In 2010 he joined the Center for Children and Technology and now works as a researcher, writer and designer.
